What is Vocation?

For many when they think of vocation they immediately associate it with career, what a person does for a living. However, looking at the root and history of the word opens up a much greater meaning. Vocatio (Latin) is to be called or summoned, and the same goes for it’s Greek equivalent “ecclesia” and comes from the Christian world in reference to those who have been called to be Saints (the Church). Thus, when I speak of vocation I am really speaking about identity and purpose; a mixture of who we are called to be, and what we are called to do. More practically what is meant by that? I will break it down below into three components:
